Hi Frank,

Great comments, thanks!

eReaders will not be able to survive at this price point, they will have to become drastically cheaper. Only then can the Amazon Kindle's of this world compete, imagine that you can buy a very good eReader (only allowing you to read books) for 75 Euros or even less. If you don't care about sleek media consumption and just want to read your book while sitting on your couch a buy decision is easily made in my opinion.

I think your remarks about magazines and newspapers is completely spot on. Yes, there will be a large crowd that want flashy .... eh .... shiny content. Newspaper and especially magazines can deliver that. These kind of media are usually also the ones that people usually 'light read'. So definitely, a potential cash cow for Apple.

I also agree with your domotica suggestion, another way how Apple can hook itself in the daily life of the masses.

Cheers,

Freddy

I can go along with your point of view on the iPad. I am not sure if it really wouldn't kill ereaders. The iPad as a closed hardware system with it's own software and iBook shop can upgrade whenever necessary to a more convenient way to read content. Despite the lack of e-ink I think the large crowd would want to go for flashy (hmm...bad choice of words in this context) content and video. Maybe even read more magazines and newspapers than books. Subscriptionbased revenue is much more lucrative for Apple than a one off transaction of a book. Magazines and newspapers don't require a long time to read so perhaps that would be trade off?
One more thing :-) The iPad could also be of great interest in the domotica world. Imagine controlling your house electronics and applications with this device. Even remotely!

Hi Kim,

Thanks for your comment! Actually the thesis of my post is the opposite: Apple is not proposing a full computer and that is exactly what we need! :) People don't need a computer they need something to be able to watch photos, do e-mail, find information, etc.. Apple has, in my opinion, created a device specifically optimized to that easily, efficiently and with a sense of fun, called the iPad.

Cheers,

Freddy
